The renewal of a private car's MVL (Motor Vehicle License), commonly known as "déclaration", in Mauritius can be accomplished either online or at your local post office. This article goes through the latter.
Glossary
Insurance certificate - Document that certifies a vehicle is insured for a period of time
Fitness certificate - Document that certifies a vehicle is fit to circulate on public roads
MVL - Motor Vehicle License (commonly known as "déclaration")
Horsepower - Vehicle registration book
When?
You need to renew your car's MVL before the current one expires, 7 days prior by latest, to avoid unnecessary stress and fines.
Avoid long queues at end of the month.
Anyone can renew a car's MVL. No identification is required.
Prerequisites
Before going to the post office, check out Mauritius Post Ltd's website for opening hours - the first table is a fallback in case you don't find your region in the other tables below it. Make sure you have the following.
Insurance certificate(s) covering the MVL's entire renewal period - you might need both the previous and current insurance certificates depending on the renewal period
Fitness certificate
Horsepower
MVL renewal fee (check out NLTA's website for the fees) - bring the exact amount based on your vehicle's details and the MVL's renewal period (3/6/12 months)
The MVL renewal process can be effected online. You will still need to print the new MVL though.
The post office accepts payment only by cash or cheque for MVL renewal.
After payment
Verify the details on the new MVL are correct before leaving the post office.
The new MVL will be valid as from the current date. I strongly advise you to replace it on your car's windshield as soon as possible. Plastic wrap the MVL before replacing the previous one to prevent condensation from ruining it.
