Renewing a car's insurance cover in Mauritius is quite straight-forward. There are, however, some things to be cautious of.
Glossary
Insurance certificate - Document that certifies a vehicle is insured for a period of time
Insurance vignette - Document that is required by law to be stuck to a car's windhield
MVL - Motor Vehicle License (commonly known as "déclaration")
When?
You need to renew your car's insurance cover before its MVL expires, 7 days prior by latest, to avoid unnecessary stress.
Avoid long queues at end of the month.
Anyone can renew the insurance cover on a car. No identification is required.
Prerequisites
Before going to the insurance company, note the car's plate number (the insurance agent will need it) and ask for the renewal fee by email/phone.
Some insurance companies offer online renewal as an option. You will still need to print the insurance certificate and vignette though.
Usually, payment can be effected by cash or card. More options may be available. Please check with your insurance company.
After payment
The new insurance vignette will be valid as from the current one's expiry date. You cannot replace it right away on your car's windshield. Therefore, make sure to set a reminder to replace it on the date its validity period begins. On that date, do the following.
Plastic wrap the insurance vignette to prevent condensation from ruining it.
Stick it to the windshield.
